IFEX members pay tribute to journalists "in limbo" on World Refugee Day

Image from the cover of Nearly 70 journalists were forced into exile over the past 12 months, with more than half coming from Iran and Cuba, says a new survey by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). The report is just one of the ways IFEX members marked World Refugee Day on 20 June.

Bahrain

Military court sentences rights activists to life

Bahrain's government says it has only tried a small number of those involved in recent protests Eight Bahraini human rights and political activists - including former head of the Bahrain Center for Human Rights (BCHR) Adbulhadi al-Khawaja and renowned blogger Abduljalil al-Singace - were given life sentences today by a military court, which found them guilty of plotting a coup against the government during two months of unrest earlier this year, report BCHR, Human Rights Watch, the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) and the "Guardian".

Mexico

Journalist and his family killed amid relentless attacks on press

A journalist who wrote about security and drug trafficking was killed in his home with his wife and photographer son in the eastern port city of Veracruz on 20 June, underscoring Mexico's cycle of violence, report ARTICLE 19, the Inter American Press Association (IAPA) and other IFEX members, who are calling on the Mexican government to take "concrete" action.

Sierra Leone

Suspects arrested in rare journalist murder

Ibrahim Foday A police officer and two others have been arrested as suspects in the stabbing death of journalist Ibrahim Foday of "The Exclusive" newspaper near Freetown, Sierra Leone, say the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

IRFS staffer, freelance journalist attacked

Celia Davies, third from left, among other IFEX members at the IFEX conference in Beirut this month Earlier this month, many IFEX members met Celia Davies, a British staffer at the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety (IRFS) in Azerbaijan, for the first time at the IFEX conference in Beirut. It hit that much closer to home when last week, Davies and U.S. freelance journalist Amanda Erickson were badly beaten while on their way home - likely in connection with their human rights work, says IRFS.

Mongolia

Parliament passes right to information law

After a five-year debate, Mongolia's Parliament passed a freedom of information law last week, joining nearly 90 other countries that provide legal protection for the right to information, report Globe International and other IFEX members.

Funding for free expression has grown, say donors

Despite perceptions of shrinking funding for freedom of expression work, donor support has actually increased in recent years, says a new report by the Center for International Media Assistance (CIMA), researched in collaboration with IFEX.

Tunisia

Strong media and civil society needed post-revolution, says IFEX-TMG

If Tunisians are to play an informed part in the country's democratic transition, they need a free and independent media and a strong, democratic and open civil society, says the first report to be published by the IFEX Tunisia Monitoring Group (IFEX-TMG) since the fall of President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali's 23-year-old regime.
