IFJ SUPPORTS FREE EXPRESSION INITIATIVE

In Afghanistan, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) is supporting plans to hold a national conference aimed at promoting the protection of journalists and freedom of expression.

On 15-16 December 2004, the IFEX member led a meeting of the Committee to Establish the Afghanistan Independent Journalists Association (AIJA). The committee passed several resolutions at the meeting, including plans to hold a national conference in
Kabul in April 2005 "with the aim of furthering the protection of journalists in Afghanistan and campaigning for freedom of expression."
The meeting was supported by International Media Support and the Danish Embassy in Kabul.

Committee members also pledged to "conduct the conference in an open and democratic manner" and to ensure that "all independent journalists in Afghanistan, including those of different ethnic groups ? working in various media" were invited.

The Committee to create the AIJA was formed in December 2002 at a seminar attended by IFJ and ARTICLE 19 that recommended constitutional and legal reforms bringing Afghanistan in line with international standards on freedom of expression.
