IMS Reports Assess Media Situation in Angola, Rwanda

19 August 2003

International Media Support (IMS) has published reports on media in Angola and Rwanda, providing background information on, and recommendations for, media rebuilding work. The reports are the result of joint assessment missions IMS conducted in 2003 with the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters (AMARC) and the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) in Angola, and with the School of Journalism and Communication of Rwanda.

The Angola report contains several proposals for improving press-freedom conditions in the country, including supporting the creation of an independent media ethics council, building a coalition of civil society organisations to lobby for media reform and supporting initiatives to encourage greater participation of women in Angolan media.

The Rwanda report examines the media's role during the 1994 genocide and how Rwandan society has been affected by the presence of hate media. It also identifies lessons learnt from the genocide that can be applied to media in other conflict-ridden countries.
