IFJ TO HOLD GLOBAL CONFERENCE ON MEDIA AND TERRORISM
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) will hold an international conference in the Basque region of Spain next year that will look at how journalists and civil liberty advocates can campaign against restrictive anti-terrorism laws.
At IFJ's recent congress in Athens, delegates agreed to support a conference on journalism and terrorism in response to growing concerns over how the U.S.-led "war on terrorism" has undermined freedom of expression and other civil liberties in many countries.
The organisation says governments throughout the world are using the threat of terrorism as an excuse to crackdown on media. "Journalists are now under more scrutiny and pressure than ever before ?[and] it looks as though the people's right to know is losing out," says IFJ President Christopher Warren.
