(IPYS/IFEX) - On 10 June 2006, unidentified individuals fired three shots at the house of radio journalist Carlos Furman, host of the programme "Destapando la olla" ("Taking the lid off the pot") broadcast on the"2 de Octubre" radio station. Furman was not at home at the time of the attack. The incident took place in the locality of Santa Elena, Entre Ríos province, northeastern Argentina.

According to Furman, he decided not to sleep at home on the night of the attack as a precaution after someone threatened him on the air during his programme, stating that he was going to shoot the journalist. The previous week, the journalist had been assaulted by a supporter of Santa Elena's mayor, Domingo Daniel Rossi, who was sentenced to three years' probation for embezzlement on 12 June. The aggressions began in March when the journalist criticised Rossi's administration and the conduct of his trial on embezzlement charges.

After the attack, the departmental chief of the neighbouring locality of La Paz, police inspector Sergio Rufiner, promised to provide round the clock security for Furman.

In March, Furman announced his retirement from journalism, as of July due to the threats he receives in the locality.
