(FOPEA /IFEX) - FOPEA welcomes the ruling of the Buenos Aires Supreme Court reinstating the life imprisonment sentence against former Pinamar police commissioner Alberto Gómez for his involvement in the 25 January 1997 murder of photographer José Luis Cabezas. This ruling revoked a previous decision by an appeals court that had reduced the original life sentence handed down in 2002 to 24 years in prison.

FOPEA calls for the life sentence to be fully carried out in the case of both Gómez and the other individuals involved in Cabezas's murder, whose life sentences were also previously confirmed by the Buenos Aires Supreme Court.

FOPEA sees the Cabezas case as the most serious attack on the press that has taken place since democracy was restored in Argentina.
