On 4 June, the Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms (MADA) and the Mexican Ambassador to the UN, Luis Alfonso De Alba, were jointly honoured in Geneva with the first Press Emblem Campaign (PEC) Award for the Protection of Journalists.

MADA, which became a member of IFEX last week, was chosen for its role in providing accurate and detailed updates during the siege of journalists both in and outside Gaza, from late December 2008 to mid-January 2009. During this time, foreign media were forbidden from entering the Gaza strip to report on the bombing campaign.

"In carrying out its mission, MADA has proven even-handedness, impartiality and a neutral coverage on media violations by all parties within and outside the occupied Palestinian territories, a courageous outlook that deserves serious acknowledgment," PEC said.

Ambassador De Alba was credited for his dedication in raising the issue of the protection of journalists in conflict zones at the level of the UN. He launched a consultation process with fellow ambassadors to look at possibilities for securing journalists' access to and safety in volatile areas.
