Police confiscate newspaper, arrest journalists

(JuHI/IFEX) - On 2 August 2005, police confiscated the current issue of "Azadliq" newspaper from various distribution centres and arrested numerous "Azadliq" staff. The journalists and media workers were taken to 39 police division. They were later released after the paper's editorial office intervened.

The police action was likely motivated by articles in the paper criticising Azeri President Ilham Aliyev's policies. Media crackdowns are common in election years in Azerbaijan, when attacks on the free and opposition press are intensified. With an election set for the current year, such actions are likely to continue.
