JOURNALISTS AT RISK

Index on Censorship is calling on free expression advocates worldwide to write letters urging the Bangladeshi government to condemn death threats against three journalists and ensure their protection.

The IFEX member says the lives of Sumi Khan, Samaresh Baidya and Zubair Siddiqui are at risk, following death threats. Between 10 and 12 March 2005, the journalists received threatening letters reportedly sent by local Islamist groups in the city of Chittagong. The journalists have reported on the activities of Islamist groups, including attacks on minority groups.

On 1 March, Index on Censorship honoured Khan with an award in recognition of her commitment to journalistic integrity in defence of freedom of expression (see http://www.indexonline.org/en/awards/2005/awardslist.shtml).
