Brazil: New Press Freedom Network Formed
3 June 2003
The Brazilian Newspaper Association (Associação Nacional de Jornais, ANJ) has announced the formation of a national press-freedom network that will monitor free-expression violations in Brazil and facilitate information exchange among press-freedom groups
The network will be run in partnership with the Brazilian office of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The network arose out of an 8 May seminar in commemoration of World Press Freedom Day where several press-freedom groups, including Reporters Without Borders (Reporters sans frontières, RSF), the Inter American Press Association and the National Federation of Journalists (Federaçao Nacional dos Jornalistas, FENAJ) called attention to the constant threats journalists face in reporting the news.
ANJ representative Marcelo Baraba says the new network is seeking to partnerships with other international organisations and will create a website and database. ANJ is a member of the World Association of Newspapers.
