UNESCO to Fund Brazilian Press Freedom Network
13 April 2004
UNESCO has approved US$25,000 in funding to support the development of a press freedom network in Brazil, one of 62 media projects around the world that will receive support from the UN agency.
The Brazilian Network for Press Freedom will use the funds to monitor press-freedom violations in the country and share information among members. It also plans to promote the importance of press freedom in Brazil, support actions against impunity and coordinate linkages between local and international press-freedom networks.
Funding for the network was approved by UNESCO's International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC), which supports press freedom initiatives in developing countries. It recently announced US$1.5 million in funding to 62 projects.
