The WAZ Media Group and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) is honouring Bulgarian journalist Lidiya Pavlova with the "WAZ-IFJ Prize for Courage in Journalism". The award emphasises the role of independent media in "scrutinising" abuses of power.

Pavlova has been a reporter for more than 15 years and is being recognised for a series of articles she wrote about the "mafia-like criminality and corruption" in the small town of Dupnitsa. She has held a spotlight on the actions of businessmen who accrue wealth through political corruption and violence, exposing herself to great personal risk. Pavlova and her family are living under threat, with constant protection from the police. Her investigations started after her own son was a victim of violence.

The international prize is endowed with 10,000 Euros and will be awarded for the first time this year.
