NORBERT ZONGO HONOURED AT FREE EXPRESSION FESTIVAL

A procession to the tomb of assassinated editor Norbert Zongo wrapped up the second International Festival of Freedom of Expression (Festival international de la liberté d'expression et de la presse, FILEP) in Ouagadougou, the capital city of Burkina Faso.

The festival, from 11 to 14 April, brought together 150 African journalists whose recommendations after the four days included stronger judicial action against impunity, including against Zongo's killers who have gone unpunished for nine years, a legal framework that decriminalises press offences, better training to become "responsible" journalists, and more collaboration between journalists' and human rights groups in the country.
