TAKE ACTION! BURMA: NOBEL LAUREATE UNDER HOUSE ARREST

20 June 2006

PEN Canada has launched a letter-writing action to help free detained Burmese pro-democracy activist Daw Aung Sun Suu Kyi, who celebrated her 61st birthday on 19 June 2006 under house arrest.

Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and leader of the opposition National League for Democracy, has been under house arrest for most of the past 16 years. Last month, Burmese authorities extended her house arrest for another year despite widespread international calls for her release. Burma, officially known as Myanmar, has been ruled by a brutal military dictatorship since 1990.
