AFGHANI BECOMES FIRST PARTICIPANT IN PEN CANADA PLACEMENT PROGRAM

An Afghani writer now living in Canada will be the first participant in a new placement program assisting writers whose professional and cultural contributions have been imperiled by the need to leave their home countries, PEN Canada has announced. Saboor Siasang will begin a four-week writing residency in October at the Banff Centre in Banff, Alberta.

The Writers in Exile Network program was created by PEN Canada's Writers in Exile committee to establish placement opportunities for exiled, immigrant and refugee writers at Canadian universities, colleges and learning centres.

Currently living in Regina, Saskatchewan, Siasang has written more than 500 articles for various newspapers, magazines and other publications. Since 1996 he has served as Editor in Chief for Kateeba Magazine, a publication by the Pakistan Society for the Preservation of Afghan Cultural Heritage (SPACH). He was a long-time member of the Afghan Journalists Association (AJA) editorial board.
