Author remains under "house arrest" after release from prison

seven-year sentence on 27 May 1996.

Recommended Action

Send appeals to the Chinese government:
  • Noting the transfer of Bao Tong from prison to house arrest
    upon expiry of his sentence
  • pointing out that he had served a seven year sentence in
violation of his right to freedom of expression
  • emphasising that his current detention under house arrest is a
continuation of the suppression of his rights
  • and therefore urging that he be freed immediately and
    unconditionally.
