TAKE ACTION! CHINA: HELP FREE JAILED UIGHUR WRITER

25 May 2004

The Writers in Prison Committee of International PEN (WiPC) invites you to write a letter in support of jailed historian and writer Tohti Tunyaz.

Tunyaz, an ethnic Uighur from China's northwest province of Xinjiang, was sentenced to 11 years in prison in February 2000 for reportedly obtaining and copying a document the Chinese government deemed "classified," says WiPC. Tunyaz's research focused on the history of China's relations with ethnic minorities, including Uighurs - a sensitive political topic in China.

The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has declared that Tunyaz is being "arbitrarily detained." He has also been adopted by Amnesty International as a prisoner of conscience.

Write a letter using a sample format available at: http://www.pencanada.ca/appeals/apr_8_04_China.php

For more information on his case, visit WiPC's website: http://212.67.202.44/~intpen/dev/viewArticles.asp?findID_=100
