CHINA: RSF LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN TO FREE JAILED JOURNALIST

8 February 2005

Reporters Without Borders (Reporters sans frontières, RSF) has launched a one-month campaign to help free jailed Chinese journalist Yu Huafeng.

In June 2004, Yu was sentenced to eight years in jail on false charges of corruption and stealing public funds. He and a colleague, Li Minying, were accused of stealing advertising revenue from their newspaper, the "Nanfang Dushi Bao." RSF says Yu's conviction is linked with the popular newspaper's investigative reporting, including its coverage of the SARS epidemic and the death of a young man in police custody.
