IFJ calls for stronger public service broadcaster
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) today called for the new independent committee investigating the future of public service broadcasting in Hong Kong to take a constructive approach.
Commerce, Industry and Technology secretary John Tsang's announcement of the formation of the committee on Tuesday January 17, was met with concerns from the Hong Kong Journalist's Association (HKJA) about the future role of Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) and its editorial independence.
IFJ president Christopher Warren said, "We urge the committee to aim to strengthen public sector broadcasting, which is a vital element of the media scene in many advanced countries, and we encourage an open and transparent review procedure, with hopes for an improved and independent station."
Additionally, Warren recommended the committee include representatives with extensive experience in public sector broadcasting, conduct consultations with people from a range of fields and, finally, to have a "clear focus on ways to improve and strengthen public service broadcasting in Hong Kong."
The HKJA has called for the government to enact legislation guaranteeing RTHK's autonomy and editorial independence in "clear and unambiguous terms."
The IFJ represents over 500,000 journalists in more than 110 countries around the world.
