FLIP INVITES PRESS FREEDOM PLEDGES FROM PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES

The Antonio Nariño Project for the Defence of Freedom of Expression and the Right to Information, of which Fundacion para la Libertad de Prensa (FLIP) is a partner, is celebrating World Press Freedom Day on 3 May with a conference to present an extensive report on such topics as journalists murdered in the past year (12), attacks against the media (car bombs and violence), threats against journalists (17), and the state of judicial investigations in these cases.

The freedom-of-expression groups organising the event have invited presidential candidates to state publicly their positions on freedom of expression and the right to information. Taking advantage of the principles outlined in the Declaration of Chapultepec and the Inter-American Declaration of Freedom of Expression, this celebration will provide the candidates with an opportunity to pledge to Colombians that they will abide by these fundamental principles in favour of a free press and democracy.

Brazilian journalist Claudio Cerri, winner of the FNPI-CEMEX prize, will give a presentation during the conference. The Antonio Nariño Project for the Defence of Freedom of Expression and the Right to Information is a strategic alliance of FLIP, the Fundacion Nuevo Periodismo Iberoamericano (FNPI), FESCOL, Andiarios and Fundacion Social. Focused on Colombia, it was founded to work for press freedom in the face of a profound humanitarian crisis.
