(IFJ/IFEX) - The IFJ is concerned for the safety of Zjelko Peratovic.
According to the IFJ's information, Peratovic, a journalist with "Globus",
has been receiving threats from members of the Croatian Information Service.
Some of these threats have come from a named officer, and have been directed
against Peratovic and his family.

The IFJ is concerned that these threats are intended to stop Peratovic from
publishing articles about members of the Croatian Information Service. The
organisation is also concerned that Peratovic may not be the only journalist
receiving such threats.

Recommended Action

Send appeals to authorities:
  • noting that such actions are attacks on freedom of expression, and are
particularly worrying as they suggest that an agent of the state finds it
acceptable to threaten journalists until they exercise self-censorship
  • urging them to fully investigate these allegations, and to ensure that
    all
journalists are free to carry out their profession in safety. This includes
the right to write and publish investigative pieces on public officials and
    other state employees
