The chief executive officer of a leading Cypriot media company was shot dead on 11 January in the capital, Nicosia, report the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and the International Press Institute (IPI).

Andis Hadjicostis was the head of one of the largest media groups in Cyprus, Dias Media Group. The company owns six television and radio stations, several magazines and newspapers and the Internet-based news portal Sigma Live, reports CPJ.

Hadjicostis was killed by two assailants in front of his home in the diplomatic neighbourhood of Engomi, reports CPJ.

"We call on Cypriot authorities to give every possible murder motive, including that he was gunned down for his work, a careful consideration," said CPJ.
