(RSF/IFEX) - RSF has learned with concern of the figures compiled by the National Union of Press Workers (Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de la Prensa, SNTP) on cases of threats, intimidation and abusive prosecutions against journalists since the beginning of 2008. Published in the national daily "El Nuevo Diario" on 5 October, the figures unfortunately confirm an increase in violence against the media, which RSF itself had already noted.

(RSF/IFEX) - RSF is concerned about the safety of television host Juan Bonilla Martínez, of the privately-owned station Mega Visión 43, whose car was fired upon in front of the television station in the northern city of Santiago de los Caballeros on 21 May 2008. RSF calls on the government to protect journalists better. The attack came five days after President Leonel Fernández was reelected amid political tensions.

(RSF/IFEX) - RSF calls for a response from the government after the increased threat of violence to Dominican Republic journalists was confirmed by a shooting attack on the home of radio host Héctor Abreu in the southwestern town of Tamayo on 6 July 2007, and threatening phone calls to television producer Juan Cadena in the capital came to light the same day.

Murderer of journalist Juan Andújar sentenced to 30 years in prison, fined for wounding another journalist; his fellow conspirator given five-year sentence

(RSF/IFEX) - Edri Vladimir "Vla" Pujols, a member of a gang known as "Los Zayayines", was sentenced on 2 May 2007 to 30 years in prison for the 2004 murder of Juan Andújar, a correspondent of the daily "Listín Diario". He was also ordered to pay the equivalent of 30,000 euros in compensation to another journalist, Jorge Luis Sención, who had to have an arm amputated after being attacked by Pujols because he had witnessed the murder of Andújar.

(RSF/IFEX) - The anonymous death threats that have been made against Manuel Vega, a journalist and television producer who has often denounced drug trafficking in the eastern province of Hato Mayor, should be taken seriously by the Dominican Republic's authorities, RSF stated on 24 January 2007, calling for Vega to be given protection appropriate to the serious risks he is facing.
