(IPYS/IFEX) - On the evening of 25 June 2009, TELECOSTA television station journalist Eduardo Vite Benítez Mata was shot by unidentified individuals in the city of Esmeraldas, northern Ecuador.

The journalist told TELECOSTA that he was riding a motorbike when he was hit in the right arm by a bullet.

Benítez Mata is the host of an opinion programme for TELECOSTA and also works as a rector in a school where he recently endorsed the dismissal of several employees.

The journalist made no comments about the motives for the attack.

The Esmeraldas Judicial Police chief, Edgar Calle Váscones, said that three nine-millimetre calibre bullet shells were found at the site of the shooting.

FUNDAMEDIOS and IPYS are investigating the case.
