(IPYS/IFEX) - On 22 March 2010, Jorge Santana Carbonell, editor of the weekly paper "Tribuna" and newscaster for the TV station CQ15 in Pasaje, southern Ecuador, died after having been in a coma for seven days. The journalist had suffered an accident while riding his motorcycle, that has not yet been satisfactorily explained.

On 16 March, Santana was traveling on his motorcycle when he was hit by a car and later found unconscious. The blow to his head partially destroyed his skull.

It is believed that the incident may have been in response from criminals affected by articles published by the "Tribuna" editor. While he was being taken to the hospital in an ambulance, Santana said that someone had been following him.

IPYS and Fundamedios will be on the alert for the investigation's results.
