EOHR Appeals For The Release Of Dr. Saad Eddin Ibrahim Because Of His Diminishing Health
On Tuesday 1 October 2002, EOHR appealed to the public prosecutor to release Dr. Saad Eddin Ibrahim, former director of the Ibn Khaldoun Centre, for health reasons. Dr. Ibrahim is now serving a seven (7) year term in Liman Torah, under case number 2561/2002. Article 784 of Egyptian criminal procedure provides for delays in punishment when convicts are "sufficiently unhealthy", such that imprisonment would further threaten their health.
EOHR received information that Dr. Ibrahim's general health has been deteriorating. On 25 September 2002, his ankle was broken after he lost his balance and fell on the floor. Already suffering from heart problems and a recurring blood clot, Dr. Ibrahim needs special medical attention.
EOHR appeals to the appropriate authorities to delay applying his prison sentence. Dr. Ibrahim's attorneys filed the requisite appeals to the appropriate court on 27 September 2002.
