(MFWA/IFEX) - Abeiku Kingsley, a sports reporter at Peace FM, an Accra-based local language radio station, was on September 5, 2009 violently assaulted at Ohene Djan Sports Stadium in Accra, by one of the security personnel providing security there.

Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA)'s correspondent reported that the incident occurred while Kingsley was trying to gain access to the players and officials of Ghana's senior national soccer team, The Black Stars.

According to Kingsley, he and two other colleagues from television station TV Africa rushed to the inner perimeter to conduct interviews. However, the angry security man singled him out and prevented him from entering the pitch. When he protested, the security man kicked him in his lower abdomen.

"I was wearing my radio station's shirt and was duly accredited, so I could not understand why he would attack me the way he did to the surprise of the spectators," Kingsley told the correspondent.

The journalist said the head of security at the Ohene Djan stadium subsequently apologised to him.
