(IPYS/IFEX) - On 12 September 2006, police arrested Byron Orlando Velásquez Jacinto, a suspect in the 10 September murder of radio journalist Eduardo Maas, which occurred in the town of Cobán, north of Guatemala City. According to the prosecutor's office, the suspect's appearance matches a witness's description.

According to police, the suspect went to a local hospital with a hand wound the day of the crime. It is presumed that he wounded himself during the murder. Investigators searched his home and found blood-stained clothing and a gold chain. They are in the process of verifying if the chain had belonged to Maas.

Maas was shot five times and killed in his car while returning from a personal engagement. He was a reporter for Raio Punto radio station and a representative of the Alta Verapaz Association of Journalists and Social Communicators (Asociación de Periodistas y Comunicadores Sociales de Alta Verapaz).
