Idéale FM radio station closed for refusing to reveal sources

(RSF/IFEX) - Reporters Without Borders condemns the 8 April 2009 closure of Idéale FM, a privately-owned radio station based in the north-western town of Port-de-Paix, by local prosecutor Jean Frédéric Bénêche for allegedly "obstructing justice." The prosecutor asked the station to identity its sources for a report about Alain Désir, an alleged drug trafficker who is being held in Florida. When the station refused, the prosecutor ordered its closure and had an official seal put on the entrance.

Judge in Jean Dominique murder case suspended for corruption

(RSF/IFEX) - The justice ministry announced on 30 March 2009 that Fritzner Fils-Aimé, the latest judge to be put in charge of the investigation into the April 2000 murder of Radio Haïti Inter director Jean Dominique, has been suspended for "serious acts of corruption." Two other judicial officials - Joseph Descharles, the prosecutor of the southwestern town of Jérémie, and Patterson Dorval, the deputy prosecutor of the southwestern town of Petit-Goâve - were suspended at the same time for similar reasons. The charges against them are to be heard by the Higher Council for the Judiciary.

Policeman ordered to pay damages to journalist he assaulted

(RSF/IFEX) - On 16 December 2008, a court in the southeastern town of Jacmel convicted police officer Bastien Novembre of assaulting Radio Express reporter Fritzer Philogène and ordered him to pay Philogène 100,000 gourdes (approx. US$2,500) in damages. If Novembre, a member of the elite Departmental Unit for Maintaining Order (UDMO), fails to pay he could go to prison for one year. A report by his superiors also recommended disciplinary measures.

Journalist sentenced to one-month prison term for allegedly defaming senator

(RSF/IFEX) - One of Haiti's best known journalists, Joseph Guyler C. Delva, was sentenced to a month in prison by a Port-au-Prince criminal court on 10 December 2008 for defaming Sen. Rudolph Boulos. Delva is still free pending the outcome of an appeal. Boulos sued Delva after he said Boulos had a US passport. This would preclude him from being a senator as the 1987 constitution bans dual nationality.

Seven years after Lindor murder convicted killers still at large

(RSF/IFEX) - Justice has still not been fully rendered in the case of Brignol Lindor, a young radio journalist who was murdered in a particularly barbaric manner in the southwestern town of Petit-Goâve seven years ago, despite the fact that two individuals implicated in his murder were given life sentences in December 2007, Reporters Without Borders said.

Victory over impunity "within reach" in Lindor murder, says RSF, after seven are convicted in absentia

(RSF/IFEX) - RSF hopes the authorities will quickly arrest the seven people who were convicted in absentia on 23 January 2008 of the 2001 murder of Radio Echo 2000 journalist Brignol Lindor, so that light can be shed on every aspect of this crime. Two other people were already sentenced on 12 December 2007 to life imprisonment for the murder.

Four arrested in murder of journalist Brignol Lindor as trial nears

(RSF/IFEX) - RSF has welcomed the arrest of four individuals suspected of killing radio journalist Brignol Lindor, of Radio Echo 2000, on the eve of a trial set to begin on 3 December 2007, six years to the day after he was hacked to death in the southwestern town of Petit-Goâve. Six other suspects ordered arrested early this month remain at large. RSF regretted such last-minute moves and warned against a hasty trial that might gloss over the responsibility of certain people for Brignol's death.

Two men get life for journalist Jacques Roche's murder

(RSF/IFEX) - RSF welcomes the life sentences handed down by a Port-au-Prince court on 30 August 2007 against two men, Alby Joseph and Chéry Beaubrun, for the abduction and murder of Jacques Roche, the head of the "Le Matin" newspaper's arts and culture pages. Roche was kidnapped on 10 July 2005 and found dead four days later.

(RSF/IFEX) - The staff of the weekly newspaper "Haïti Progrès" have said that Johnson Edouard, who was killed on the night of 12 April 2007 in the north-western city of Gonaïves, had not worked for the newspaper for about three years. The theory that he was murdered in connection with his political activism therefore seems more likely. Edouard was the regional representative of Fanmi Lavalas, former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide's party.

Miragoâne residents arrest one of Brignol Lindor's alleged murderers

(RSF/IFEX) - RSF has welcomed the arrest of Joubert St-Just, one of the alleged killers of Radio Echo 2000 presenter Brignol Lindor, who was hacked to death with machetes on 3 December 2001 in the southern town of Petit-Goâve. St-Just was arrested on 30 March 2005 by residents in the nearby town of Miragoâne.
