Second journalist murdered since the beginning of the year
(RSF/IFEX) - RSF has expressed concern over the murder of Osman López, who was shot to death on 18 April 2009, in the capital, Tegucigalpa. The 27-year-old journalist worked for the presidential palace's Department of Communications and for "La Tribuna" newspaper. He was also a correspondent for the Canal 45 television station.
"There is currently no indication that the murder is related to Osman López's profession. Nevertheless, the climate of insecurity, coupled with ongoing impunity, must necessarily weigh on the press. Whether this is a 'common crime' or premeditated murder, the authorities should react quickly to ensure that freedom of movement is not further curtailed," said RSF.
Osman López was shot by unknown individuals while he was in a vehicle with his cousin and a friend. The assailants pretended to ask for a cigarette and opened fire, killing him instantly. The journalist's cousin was seriously injured and taken to hospital.
RSF noted that a number of attacks against Honduran journalists have recently taken place and that Rafael Munguía, a correspondent for Radio Cadena Voces, was murdered on 31 March.
