VETERAN JOURNALIST KILLED IN CROSSFIRE

A photojournalist was killed last week while covering a shootout in India's Jammu region, reports the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ).

Ashok Sodhi, a 25-year veteran of the newspaper industry, was reporting on an armed encounter in Kashmir's Samba district between security forces and militants who had allegedly infiltrated from Pakistan-controlled territory on 11 May, when he was killed in the crossfire.

Sodhi was employed by the "Daily Excelsior", a leading newspaper in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

IFJ has called upon media organisations to increase safety awareness among their staff and to provide comprehensive insurance cover, as well as basic protective gear for all personnel deployed to conflict zones.
