Incident details

Assault

Carlos Perdede, Journalist
(AJI/IFEX) - A building security officer of Bank Indonesia, identified only as Marlon, attacked a TV journalist in Jakarta on 13 May 2009. The reporter, Carlos Perdede of SCTV, reportedly suffered serious head wounds.

The Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) Indonesia condemned the security officer's actions, saying it is "incompatible with the Press Law that provides the rights to the journalist to conduct news coverage in order to serve the community."

The incident happened when the SCTV crew entered the BI Building in Jalan MH Thamrin, Jakarta to conduct news coverage. The security officers tried to prevent the crew from going any further and resorted to physical violence.

AJI Indonesia Chairman Nezar Patria described the security personnel's actions as "excessive."

AJI has learned that Bank Indonesia governor, Budiono, is being considered as the running mate of Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in the coming presidential elections
