OSCE Conference Tackles Media and Gender

More than 100 journalists and media experts from Central Asia, the southern Caucasus and the Balkans met in Tbilisi, Georgia, for a conference aimed at promoting gender-sensitive reporting.
Organised by local members of the international network GenderMediaCaucasus with support from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the 21-23 July 2003 conference sought to address the need for better coverage of women's issues in the region. While women make up half of all media consumers, women's issues get little space in the media, says the OSCE.
The Georgia conference follows an OSCE meeting in May in Warsaw, Poland, where participants issued recommendations on using the media to promote gender equality and break down gender stereotypes.
