PFC MARKS "RIGHT TO KNOW" DAY
Journalists Against Corruption (Periodistas frente a la corrupción, PFC) joined organisations from around the world on 28 September to mark Right to Know Day - an international event established by the Freedom of Information Advocates Network (FOIANet) to promote access to information.
PFC held events in Honduras and El Salvador, where local civil society organisations are lobbying for the adoption of freedom of information (FOI) laws. In Honduras, PFC conducted a seminar and held meetings with journalists, policy makers and civil society groups.
In El Salvador, PFC's sister organisation, Probity for El Salvador (Probidad para El Salvador, PES), issued a press release highlighting the importance of FOI laws and calling on citizens to support its efforts. PES is currently running a campaign to pressure the El Salvadoran government into passing FOI legislation. PES has held media interviews, met with policy makers and community groups and launched a lawsuit against the general accounting office (Court of Accounts) for restricting access to auditing reports.
PROBIDAD, the regional anti-corruption group that oversees PFC and PES, also marked Right to Know Day by dedicating an issue of its regional journal, Revista Probidad, to freedom of information. Articles discussed the need for FOI legislation, FOI best practices, and strategies to assure the adoption and application of FOI laws.
