CONFERENCE TO SPOTLIGHT FREE EXPRESSION IN THE MIDDLE EAST
The Beacon for Freedom of Expression, a global electronic archive of censorship, will shine a spotlight on the Middle East when it holds its annual conference in September 2004 in Alexandria, Egypt.
Taking place from 18 to 20 September, the conference will feature two workshops on the Middle East. They will examine freedom of expression and copyright in the region, and the history of censorship in the Arab world. The conference will also tackle other themes, including new forms of censorship, the tension between individual rights and collective traditions in Africa, and future challenges for free expression.
Representatives of the Writers in Prison Committee of International PEN and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) are among the invited speakers.
