PINA CONVENTION TO CELEBRATE REGIONAL MERGER


The Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) will be holding its biennial convention in Tonga on 15-21 November 2005, where it will celebrate its re-launch as a new regional media organisation.

Last year, the IFEX member decided to complete a merger with the Pacific Islands Broadcasting Association following an agreement between the two organisations in March 2003.

The Media Council of Tonga is hosting the convention. The theme will be Media Freedom in a Transitional Society and will feature meetings, workshops and visits with local media outlets and journalists.

PINA will present several awards, including the Pacific Media Freedom Award. The keynote speaker will be Greg Urwin, the Secretary General of the Pacific Island's Forum.
