IFJ REPORT SLAMS WAR ON TERRORISM
Freedom of expression and other civil liberties are being sacrificed by democratic states in the name of national security, according to a new report co-authored by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ).
"Journalism, Civil Liberties and the War on Terrorism" documents the increasing attacks on freedom of expression in 20 countries that have occurred as a result of the so-called war on terrorism.
It concludes that roughly half of the minimum standards set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights are being undermined by governments around the world.
Co-authored with Statewatch, the report says a "pervasive atmosphere of paranoia" in the media is leading to dangerous levels of self-censorship, while governments are covertly creating massive databanks for surveillance of their citizens.
