Media Assistance Groups Form Global Partnership
10 May 2005
Twenty media assistance organisations have formed an international partnership to support the development of independent media world-wide and share experiences and information across the media aid sector, reports the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ).
The Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD) aims to provide an international forum for media assistance organisations to share best practices in training journalists, supporting broadcast stations, newspapers and magazines, working for open and accessible Internet and telecommunications policies, and reforming media law.
GFMD also intends to establish standards in areas such as monitoring and evaluation to guide media assistance organisations in their work.
GFMD was created at a meeting of founding members in Bangkok, Thailand in October 2004. The steering committee, representing 20 organizations, is set to meet again in London in June.
Steering committee members include the International Federation of Journalists, the Southeast Asian Press Alliance, Media Rights Agenda, the Media Foundation for West Africa and the World Association of Newspapers.
GFMD will hold its first conference on media development in Jordan from 1 to 3 October 2005, which is expected to bring together 300 participants.
