Global Conference Brings Together Media Development Actors
Media development organisations, press freedom groups, independent journalists and donors from around the world met in Amman, Jordan, last week for the Global Forum for Media Development (GFMD), billed as the first global gathering of media assistance practitioners to discuss the issues they face.
Held from 1 to 3 October 2005, the conference aimed to bring practitioners together to discuss challenges, to establish standards in the field, and to find collective ways of increasing the ability of media aid organisations to contribute to political and economic development around the world.
One session at the conference analysed how media development has made a difference in fostering political reform in Georgia, Ecuador, Ukraine and Lebanon.
Another session focused on conflict prevention, reconstruction and emergencies in Iraq, Sudan, Afghanistan, Nepal and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Time was also devoted to exploring the donor experience in media development work around the world.
