IFEX MEMBERS HOST AFRICA CONFERENCE ON FREE EXPRESSION

Free expression advocates from across Africa will be meeting in Accra, Ghana from 28 to 30 October 2005 to develop strategies for lobbying regional and international bodies and to discuss proposals for developing common legal standards on free expression on the continent.

Supported by UNESCO's International Programme for the Development of Communication, the conference is being held by the Media Foundation for West Africa, Journaliste en danger (JED), the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) and Media Rights Agenda (MRA).

Representatives of international free expression organisations, including International Media Support, ARTICLE 19, "Index on Censorship" and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) will be participating in the conference. The Special Rapporteur on the Right to Freedom of Expression in Africa, Andrew Chigovera, will also be attending.
