WAN PUBLISHES ANNUAL PRESS FREEDOM REVIEW

The World Association of Newspapers (WAN) has released its annual review of the state of press freedom worldwide, naming Iraq and the Philippines as the most dangerous countries on the globe for journalists.

According to WAN, 58 journalists and media workers were killed in the line of duty in 2005, with Iraq claiming 22 lives.

Seven individuals were killed in the Philippines. In the last three years, 25 journalists and media workers have been murdered in the country, making it the deadliest non-combat country for journalists, says WAN.

In 2004, WAN counted 71 journalists and media workers killed, including 23 in Iraq.

WAN?s figures include cases where the motive for the killings is unconfirmed or where investigations have not been completed.
