BOOK DOCUMENTS MEDIA CONCENTRATION IN SOUTHERN AFRICA

The Freedom of Expression Institute (FXI) has launched a new book that examines how South African media and information communications technology (ICT) companies have come to dominate the Southern African region in the years since the fall of apartheid in 1994.

Entitled "The Great Trek North: the Expansion of South African Media and ICT Companies into the SADC Region", the book shows how South African companies have steadily increased their control over the region's print, broadcast, telecommunications, satellite and Internet sectors.

It was written by Console Tleane and is based on two years of research.

FXI says the book adds to the growing body of evidence about the actual nature and interests of South Africa on the continent, challenging some of the mainstream, often celebratory, analyses of the country's interventions on the continent.

It offers suggestions for counteracting the influence of South African media and ICT companies, including tighter regulations on media ownership, content quotas to protect local culture, and increased spending on public broadcasting.
