OAS Report Surveys Free Expression in the Americas

23 May 2006

The Organization of American States' (OAS) Office of the Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression has released its 2005 annual report, which surveys the state of free expression and press freedom in the Americas.

The report documents violations recorded during 2005 in 35 countries in North, Central and South America, and the Caribbean.

It also includes a legal analysis of public demonstrations as a form of freedom of expression, a report on access to information laws in the region, and a comparative study of the use of exit polls during elections in Europe and the Americas.

The Special Rapporteur monitors freedom of expression in the Americas region, including OAS member states' compliance with regional human rights treaties, such as the American Convention on Human Rights.
