WAN PROJECT TO BOOST INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPERS

The World Association of Newspapers (WAN) has launched a new project aimed at helping independent newspapers in the Middle East and North Africa succeed financially in the face of restrictive press laws, government censorship and commercial barriers.

The Arab Newspaper Development Project will work with 12 selected newspapers to create and implement new ways of attracting advertisers and increasing readership over the next 15 months.

In the project's first phase, WAN will work with three newspapers in Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Each of the three partners will devise and implement a commercial or editorial strategy with the support of external consultants. Once the project is completed, the newspapers will develop a programme in collaboration with WAN to share the expertise and lessons learned with nine other newspapers in the region.

A practical training manual will be produced at the end of the project, drawing on material contributed by the 12 participating newspapers. The bulk of the manual will be monthly written reports submitted by the newspapers, which will also be published on the Arab Press Network. The project is funded by WAN and the Cairo-based Danish-Egyptian Dialogue Institute.
