RECORD YEAR FOR JOURNALISTS KILLED: WAN


This year is turning out to the deadliest year for journalists in nearly a decade, with 75 killed so far, according to a new report by the World Association of Newspapers (WAN).

The highest numbers of deaths have occurred in Iraq, where 26 journalists have lost their lives reporting on the conflict. Philippines recorded the second highest death toll, with eight journalists murdered so far this year.

WAN began keeping records of journalists' murders in 1997. Its previous record-high was 72 journalists killed in 2004.

WAN's figures include all media workers killed in the line of duty or targeted because of their work. It also includes cases where the motive for the killings is unconfirmed or where investigations have not been completed.
