CPJ TO HONOUR JOURNALISTS FROM COLOMBIA, YEMEN, THE GAMBIA AND IRAQ

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) will honour four courageous journalists from Colombia, Yemen, The Gambia and Iraq with its 2006 International Press Freedom Awards.

Jesús Abad Colorado of Colombia, Jamal Amer of Yemen and Madi Ceesay of the Gambia "have risked their lives to report the news, withstanding attacks, harassment and imprisonment," says CPJ.

The organisation will also posthumously honour Atwar
Bahjat, a correspondent for Al-Arabiya satellite television and former Al-Jazeera reporter who was killed while covering a bombing near Samarra, Iraq, in February.
The awards ceremony on 21 November 2006 in New York City will commemorate CPJ's 25th anniversary. CPJ will also present its Burton Benjamin Memorial Award for lifetime achievement to Hodding Carter III, a respected newspaper editor, television journalist, foundation executive and teacher.
