SEENPM STUDY EXAMINES MEDIA AND GENDER IN SOUTHEAST EUROPE

In the Balkans, rapid political, economic and social changes in recent years have led to a democratisation of the media sector. Media ownership is no longer dominated by the state and the introduction of new media technologies is altering the nature of public communication. However, media coverage of social issues, particularly gender, has not kept up with the times.

This is the conclusion of a new study commissioned by the South East European Network for the Professionalization of the Media (SEENPM), which analysed representations of women in print media in six countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia and Serbia. The study was published by Mediacentar Sarajevo, a member of the SEENPM network.

"Stereotyping: Representation of Women in Print Media in South East Europe" contains research papers written by media experts and analysts from the region, and is intended to provide a basis for media organisations to change editorial policies regarding gender issues.
