(RSF/IFEX) - In a letter sent to the President of the Islamic Republic of
Iran, Mohammad Khatami, on 7 July 1999, RSF expressed its deepest concern
over the case of two journalists arrested on 16 and 19 June. The journalists
are Hechmatollah Tabarzadi, the chief editor of the reformist weekly
"Hoviyat-é-Khich", and Hossein Kachani, the weekly's director. Stating that
"the journalists are reportedly under interrogation at the Intelligence
Ministry," RSF is "deeply worried by the allegation of the use of torture"
against the journalists and urged Mr Khatami to secure their release.

Moreover, their lawyer, Mr Safari, has not been allowed to visit them in the
twenty days since their detention. RSF stressed in its letter that "holding
them without access to their lawyer is illegal."
