"HISTORIC" MEETING EXAMINES POST-WAR MEDIA REBUILDING

An "historic" meeting of 20 press-freedom groups and media development organisations, including ARTICLE 19, Index on Censorship, Reporters Without Borders (Reporters sans frontières, RSF), the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the World Association of Newspapers (WAN), has resulted in a common agreement to co-ordinate efforts for rebuilding war-torn Iraq's media and supporting the development of a media policy for the country.

International Media Support (IMS), which hosted the 24 April meeting in London, says the world?s leading media development organisations were brought together for the first time to exchange ideas and discuss possible joint partnerships in Iraq.

Participants agreed that a clear policy statement on media by Iraqi authorities stressing strong local ownership and participation would be crucial to supporting a constructive dialogue on media development. They also recognised that a collaborative and strategic effort was key to successful media rebuilding efforts in the country, including training programs.

Participants directed IMS to consider conducting a preliminary assessment mission to Iraq and agreed to reconvene a follow-up meeting in Baghdad in September. A website and list serve will be created to exchange information. Meanwhile, IMS, Index on Censorship, the Institute for War and Peace Reporting and the Baltic Media Centre will publish a survey of Iraqi media in June.
