IFJ SENDS JOINT MISSION TO IRAQ

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the Federation of Arab Journalists (FAJ) are sending a joint mission to Iraq next week aimed at supporting the establishment of a national journalists' organisation.

Iraq's journalistic community is fragmented and in need of training and improved working conditions, IFJ says. "The creation of an Iraqi journalists' national body, encompassing all ethnic and cultural groups and dedicated to the defence of press freedom and journalists' rights would be a valuable fresh start for the profession," the group adds.

The joint mission will take place from 19 to 25 January and include a training team from the International News Safety Institute (INSI). Meetings will be held with Iraqi journalists, UN agencies and civil society representatives in the cities of Baghdad and Irbil.
